It’s that time of year again! School’s back in session. The leaves are changing colors. Before you know it, we’re all going to be sipping hot chocolate in a warm, cozy home. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be scrolling on your phone for that perfect Christmas gift. But what we’re really trying to figure out is how to fill the empty stockings hung with care, especially when you’re trying to find stocking stuffers for 6 year old boys.
Because I only have boys, I take certain things for granted. I get told repeatedly, “Boys are easy”. Honestly, it’s not a complete lie. So long as they have blocks, dinosaurs, trucks and farm or construction equipment, they’re happy little larks…most of the time. But, when it comes to filling up a stocking for them, I turn up stumped.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been brainstorming for this blog post for what seems like months now. Really, this post comes from me trying to solve a problem I have in my own life and recognizing that other boy moms very likely have this problem too.
The Requirements
This list is full of great stocking stuffer ideas for the average 4-8 year old. I mostly geared this towards my soon to be 6 year old. When coming up with this list, I focused on items that weren’t going to break the bank, would actually be played with and appreciated, and weren’t cheaply made.
Additionally, I came up with some categories. I tried to think of stocking stuffers that were useful, something to wear, silly boy items sure to make them laugh, and toys they actually want.
Here’s what I’ve come up with since I started brainstorming! By the way, as an Amazon Affiliate, I can make a small commission at no additional cost to you. Read my full disclaimer here.
Useful Stocking Stuffers for 6 Year Old Boys
Originally, I almost scrapped this category. I don’t think most six year-olds care about how useful an item is that they get in their stocking. My inward thoughts tell me they’ll find them dull and boring. But, I kept coming up with ideas of items that they honestly will probably like.
Welly Bandages
I’ve never actually bought welly brand of Band-Aids before. Right now my boys are big into Paw Patrol that the Band-Aid brand offers. You can find them literally anywhere–Kroger, Walmart, Walgreens, etc. Frankly, I have to hide the darn things. My sons will come up with any excuse to put a Band Aid on.
The Welly Bandages (which you can find here on Amazon, or at Walmart and Walgreens) have some really fun patterns and designs. I’m partial to the dinosaur patterns, of course. If you never thought of adding bandages to your stocking stuffer list, it’s a fantastic idea. Any 6 year old is bound to dry some tears at the mention of using them.
Flashlights
Flashlights are relatively inexpensive but totally worth it. Obviously, you can find them anywhere. My favorite place is near the checkout lane at a farm store like Tractor Supply or Orscheln. There they are the cheapest I’ve seen, and also smaller for young toddlers. My boys love having them.
Small Sized Tools
Any boy wants to think he’s just like Dad. Why not encourage that by getting him his own tool set? I’m not talking about a play tool set for him to tinker around with indoors. You can find small screwdrivers, hammers, or even a small garden shovel to add to his stocking.
Your little man is going to love having a set of tools to help him work on projects right next to Dad, or pretend he is fixing his bicycle and outdoor toys. My favorite part about this idea is that it really encourages creativity and imaginative play.
Child Size Umbrella
My boys constantly ask for their own personal umbrella. Having one included in their stocking at Christmas is perfect. During the holiday season, it’s hard to imagine that spring is just around the corner. But before you know it, you’re going to be toting little one to school during a thunderstorm (or if you live in the South, it’ll be in the next few weeks, honestly).
It will be the perfect opportunity to break in his new umbrella. You can find inexpensive ones for less than $10, but these are by far my favorite. Yes, they’re almost $20/piece, but I think the designs are perfect.
Stocking Stuffers He Can Wear
Building off of the idea that you buy your kids something to read, wear, something they want and need, I came up with this list of items he can wear. These are inexpensive and small enough to fit into his stockings.
A Perfect Beanie
It’s 2023. Beanies are definitely “in”, especially the Carhart ones. Personally, whenever something becomes a trend that I notice, I try to steer as far away as possible for absolutely no reason (I refuse to conform, I’m different, lol). That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t order some for my sons, especially if it means they’ll keep their ears warm.
If you’re like me and have three to buy for, I love these because I can get all three for less than $15! If you feel like little man needs to get in on the trend (in all honesty, a little boy in a Carhart beanie is adorable), by all means, go all out in this area!
Stock Up On All the Winter Gear
There’s no reason to stop with just a beanie, especially if you live in the Arctic (as my husband refers to anything North of the Mason Dixon line). New gloves or mittens, scarfs, and even fun patterned wool socks are inexpensive ways to really stuff that stocking full. They’re for sure useful and will keep them warm for the rest of those winter months.
Think of Summer Fun Clothing Accessories
Once the warm months hit and the short sleeves and shorts come out, there becomes certain items that I end up buying anyways. I might as well gift them at Christmastime in a stocking. I’m talking about cool sunglasses, boy necklaces (especially if Dad wears one similar to these), ball caps, and even temporary tattoos.
And yes, the temporary tattoos are not that big and won’t help stuff the stocking, I know that. But they sure are fun. Now, my only problem is to make sure I know where they are by June.
A Brand New Watch
The amount of times I’ve had my almost 6 year old ask me for a watch in the past week is probably at least 10 times. I’m not sure why exactly he’s obsessed with them at the moment. Again, it’s probably a Dad thing. Most 6 year-olds are at the stage where Dad does no wrong in their eyes. When they grow up they’re going to be just like him.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. Even if Dad isn’t in your home, boys want to feel grown up and important. Gifting them a watch in their stocking is a great way to show them that you think they are big enough to have one. Additionally, if they’re learning how to tell time in school (which they most likely are), you’re encouraging them to understand it better too.
Silly Boy Items Sure To Get a Reaction
If I’ve learned anything about being a boy mom, it’s that they love to laugh. A boy can turn even the most serious situation into giggles. Of course, a big part of being a boy mom is trying to teach them when it’s an appropriate time to crack a joke and when it isn’t. Overall, though, encouraging them to embrace the silly side of life isn’t a bad thing at all.
Silly Things Having To Do With Flatulence
I know, I’m stating the obvious. Boys think farting is hilarious. I can’t take complete credit for this; my sister in law gifted my son a fart button for Christmas a few years back. They thought it was hilarious. Within minutes of them opening it, they had all of us rolling with laughter.
Your six year old might be just starting to get into the prankster phase. Gift them a whoopie cushion if you’re brave enough to allow them to possibly try to prank you in the near future with it. I could go on, but if you just type “fart toys” into your Amazon search bar, you’re going to come up with some priceless entertainment on Christmas morning.
Age Appropriate Joke Books
Not every joke in a 6 year old’s mind has to do with poop, believe it or not. And if you’re like me and want to stray away from the farting nonsense, getting them a joke book might be the perfect solution. Sometimes as moms, we forget to actually enjoy laughing with our kids.
Especially if your son tries your patience every moment of the day, you might need some quality time and good memories together. If your son isn’t a great reader (six year old boys aren’t very well), reading to him some jokes each night from a joke book might be the perfect bonding time for the both of you.
The More Random, the Better
My favorite thing about Amazon is you can find literally anything you’re looking for, and some things you never would have thought of. In my search for items that would be sure to get a fun reaction out of my kiddos, I came across some wild ideas.
Some of them were completely ludicrous and there’s no way I would buy that. Others were dumb enough that they seem perfect. These include funny old man glasses, dinosaur sling shots, and a nose pencil sharpener (seriously!).
Toy Stocking Stuffers for 6 Year Old Boys
Of course, the best items (from your son’s perspective) in your stockings are the ones they can play with. This can be difficult if you’re not wanting to break the bank, especially if you’re already planning on getting him a nicer toy aside from the stockings.
I find these items easier because I can buy a pack of something and evenly distribute them between all three of my boys. This makes for an even cheaper Christmas Stocking. My go-tos are matchbox cars, monster trucks, small dinosaurs (Hobby Lobby is perfect because they sell a large pack for a reasonable price), and glow sticks.
I also know that with boys, you can never go wrong with a nerf gun set. The best way to do this is by buying them in a pack, especially if you have more than one stocking for a boy to stuff. I like this pack of four that also gives you a decent amount of darts, but typically I end up buying more darts anyways.
But, I also tend to grab other toys that are a bit more pricey, but something I wouldn’t necessarily give as a present. These include binoculars, walkie talkies, and small dress up costumes (yes, they fit in a stocking).
To Close
Gift giving is a part of Christmas that isn’t going to go away. For sure we want to make our gifts special to our kids, including the Christmas stockings. It’s definitely not something you should be stressing over: coming up with a list of stocking stuffers for 6 year old boys should now be simpler than ever.
