What You Need to Know About Philly Cheesesteaks
Growing up, my family had roast every Sunday for dinner. My mom would cook it in the crockpot with water and a package of French Onion soup mix. Not trying to slam my mother (I love ya, mom!), because this was a recipe my dad absolutely loved. Unfortunately, my brothers and I hated it!
We were able to get our meat directly from a cow farmer near us, recently. You can read more about why we chose this route (and why I’ll never purchase beef from a grocery store again) here! When we picked up the meat from the butcher shop and unloaded it in our freezer, I had several packages of roast that I wasn’t sure what I would do with!
In an attempt to find different ways to eat it, I came up with the idea of Philly Cheesesteaks. What I love about them is it can be a relatively inexpensive recipe if you purchase your meat this way. I’ve been able to penny pinch a tad bit more by buying almost expired/discounted hoagie type bread from the deli if I’m grocery shopping on the same day that I plan to make Philly Cheesesteaks. Additionally, this recipe is so simple and fast, and for sure a recipe my whole family enjoys.
Tips and Tricks
I like to go light on the seasonings with the meat. Adding Worcestershire sauce gives the meat the tang that you want for your cheesesteaks without it being too “saucy”. I will say that I “eyeball” the sauce that I add and honestly put way more than two tablespoons on it.
Provolone Cheese is my go to for Philly Cheesesteaks. However, I’ve made this recipe with mozzarella cheese before and enjoyed them even more. I would never be afraid to try a new cheese or even a different spread besides mayonnaise.
Lastly, I’m especially picky about how I eat my sandwiches. I absolutely adore a hot, toasty (but lightly toasted) sandwich. The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to use a toaster oven. I can’t seem to find the kind of oven I have, but this one on Amazon is inexpensive and a great kitchen tool to have on hand. I slightly heated the bread to get a nice thin crust (where most of the bread is still soft, aside from the outer edge). Then I spread mayonnaise on both sides of the bread and lightly toasted it again. Lastly, I added cheese and toasted it a third time, only until the cheese melted.
Finally,
I know, this sounds tedious. Really, we’re talking about 30 seconds to a minute each time you’re heating the bread (which can all be done while the meat is still cooking). Finally, I don’t do this for my whole family. My husband prefers his bread to be toasted but the cheese to not be. At this point, my boys don’t care. So, it’s very easy to take an extra bit of time for myself to really enjoy a hot sandwich.
