Five years ago, when I left my bank teller job to begin my homemaking journey with my new bouncing baby boy, I hit culture shock. I hated it, all of it. There were many reasons for my immediate loneliness, depression, and boredom, but I think most of all I didn’t have a good mindset of what homemaking truly is. Fast forward to present day, where I’ve learned how to take care of my mental health, which has allowed me to genuinely enjoy the stay at home mom lifestyle. One of the ways that has helped me keep my mind on track is to discover new hobbies I can learn that help me become a better wife and mother.
Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.
The Why:
Before we can get started, we need to talk about our “why”. A lot of us can fall into a category of “tried that once or twice”. It was fun while it lasted. Inevitably, it became boring, we didn’t have the time for it, or we felt like we sucked at it, became discouraged, and gave up. We need to have a why that motivates us to stick with something until we get to where our “hobby” has become a “skill” or “talent”. And who knows, maybe eventually, with enough effort and hard work, you can turn this new skill into an awesome side gig. You can read more about adding secondary income streams here.
This post is all about inspiring you to learn something new. My goal was to come up with an idea of hobbies that will actually improve your home. Think of it as useful ways to be a better wife, mom, and even friend. If you see your time at home as a place to constantly try out new things or improve skills you’ve already started learning, it puts a completely different perspective on how you view your life.
New Hobbies That Improve Your Cooking
A whole lot of my daily routine revolves around cooking. I wouldn’t necessarily call it my favorite thing to do, but it is probably my most useful. Because we eat out maybe once a week, it is up to me to deliver on the other 20 meals we eat. I like to think of myself as a “foodie” of sorts. I love trying new recipes and I love enjoying those recipes even more. Cooking hobbies are an easy place to start because it’s something truly your whole family, and friends and relatives even, will enjoy. See what you can learn about:
- Sourdough/Breadmaking in general
- Canning
- Cookie or Cake Decorating
- Desserts
- Learn everything you can about a new authentic cuisine
- Charcuterie Boards
I want to add something about my last bullet point–Charcuterie boards. Who says that your new hobby to learn has to feel like it belongs in the 19th century? I started to practice charcuterie boards simply because they were trending on Instagram and I wanted to try it out for myself. After two or three at home practices, I made one once for a potluck at our church. I’ve been asked to make them ever since.
All I’m saying is don’t limit yourself to hobbies that are only the typical SAHM/homemaker type hobbies. If you see something and think to yourself, “Hey, that looks like fun. I bet I could never make it look that good, though”, go for it and see.
Affordable Hobbies You Can Start Today
Literally, any of these you can begin with $50 or less and a quick trip to Hobby Lobby. Don’t believe me? I saw a lady in our church crochet baby booties in ten minutes when I was 11. Fast forward six years and I randomly remembered it. I went on YouTube and typed “crochet” for beginners. After watching 5 minutes of a video, I paused it, drove into Walmart, bought some hooks and my favorite color yarn, came back home, and started working on a granny square that afternoon. These cheap hobbies include:
- Crochet
- Cross Stitch
- Tatting
- Drawing
- Painting
- Calligraphy/Faux Calligraphy
- Jewelry Making
- Scrapbooking

You may not be able to show your creative or artistic side as much. For some of us who feel like we don’t have a creative bone in our bodies, we may be more drawn to this list. They can include:

- Sewing
- DIY Herbal Remedies
- Woodworking/Refurbishing furniture
Homemaking Hobbies to Improve Yourself
Self-care is a fun way boost your mood, improve how you feel about yourself, and better your mental and physical health and wellness. Think outside the box a bit and focus on something you enjoy that directly helps yourself. When you take the time to look and feel great, other areas of your life can become great too.
- Exercise/Fitness: think joining fitness classes, getting (or becoming) a personal trainer, taking golf or tennis lessons, or even joining a sports league
- Fashion and Hair
- Makeup/Nail Art
- Bullet Journaling
- Reading
- Self Defense Training
A quick note about one of these bullet listed suggestions; I see you skimming over bullet journaling thinking “Yeah right, like I have time for that”. Honestly, if you’re looking for an excellent way to get all of your thoughts out onto paper, bullet journaling is a great place to start. Surprisingly, having a spot to jot down all of the daily habits you want to follow can really give you the accountability you need. We only get one lifetime to learn and be all we can. I think a lot of times, once we finish school, start our own families, work our 9-5s and live for the weekends, we tend to let go of the idea of always wanting to learn something new. Hopefully, you feel inspired after reading this. Slowly we can let got of our mindset that says “I could never do that” and start to focus on something we’ve always wanted to learn or master.
