There comes a certain point where you stop worrying about becoming the skinniest you can be, but rather becoming the healthiest you can be. It’s at this transition that you’re focused more on feeling great, rather than looking great. You realize that the time clock is ticking. If you want to feel your best later in life, there’s some lifestyle changes that need to happen now. Here are some daily healthy habits that people who rarely get sick do.
Not medical advice: consult with your primary healthcare provider for any concerns before attempting any of these suggestions.
1. Take Walks Regularly
People who are able to maintain their weight on a regular basis typically credit that skill to regular walking. Additionally, studies have proven that walking is linked to lowered blood pressure, healthy hearts, and less brain fog. Walking also helps your joints heal and improves flexibility.
The time of day matters too; if you walk for 20-30 minutes after your evening meal, you’re more likely to improve your digestion, decrease heartburn, regulate your blood sugar and even improve your liver function. Walking doesn’t have to be a formal, every day activity. You can get walking in by simply parking at the end of the parking lot or opting to take the stairs.
2. Improve Your Oral Hygiene
This means more than just brushing your teeth and flossing every day, although that’s a good place to start. Once you start taking care of your oral health, you’ll be surprised by how much stronger your immune system will be. Besides, most people don’t enjoy a toothache.
Did you know tongue scraping is a proven way to reduce your risks of cavities? When you’re removing bacteria, dead skin cells on your tongue, and other debris, you’re eliminating bad breath, and decreasing plaque buildup. It takes only a few seconds longer to add this to your oral routine, right after you brush your teeth.
It’s important to note the kind of tool you’re using. Stainless steel is (IMO) the best option. There’s not a fake gold coating or special color coating that can rub off in your mouth. Other oral hygiene practices I try to incorporate include mouth taping and removing tonsil stones when needed. Both of these improve bad breath and have been shown to reduce infections and cavities in your mouth. 3. Boost Your Sleep Patterns
I never would have expected that the number one thing I would be researching after my first son was born was how to get a baby to sleep. I’m pretty sure I spent hours on Pinterest and Google in that first week of his life. Now, I’m surprised by how much research I put into my own sleep and how to improve it.
I’ve made some pretty drastic changes, like ditching the $5 Kohls pillows for a $75 Green Guard Certified pillow. Or replacing my whole mattress with a nontoxic one (see this blog post for more details). There’s three basic tips I’ve utilized though, that you can implement as well for nothing (or next to nothing).
Get Morning Sunlight
Sometimes as adults, we forget that we need sunshine. We get so focused on our day to day routines. By the end of the day realize we haven’t spent hardly any time outside. Not only are we depleting our bodies of much needed vitamin D, but we’re also forgetting to utilize our best defense against stress and depression.
Now imagine how much better our lives would be if we committed to spending 5-10 minutes outside every morning to get morning sunlight! Morning light right after you wake up helps improve your circadian rhythm, your hormone productions, and your overall sleep cycle. On top of that, you’re still getting your Vitamin D and decreasing the stress you have in your life. Add a morning cup of joe (or hot tea) and you’re really living the dream.
Use a Sunrise Alarm Clock
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t completely on board with the idea of purchasing or using a sunrise alarm clock. Bert was the one who got me hooked on it. Actually, it didn’t work for me for about the first month that he had it (probably because it was on his side of the bed). Now though, I’m a huge fan.
The basic gist of it is that you slowly wake up to light in your room. This is way better than being jolted awake by a tune from your phone. You’d be surprised by how much happier you’ll be by just making this small transition. I’ve also noticed that your heart rate doesn’t sky rocket when I wake up this way either. Does this really improve your overall health? Only if you consider your mood and mental wellbeing a portion of your health you want to improve.
Get Enough Sleep
I know, I know, every blog post in the inter-web is going to mention getting enough sleep. We don’t get enough sleep, though. So, it’s become overstressed. We tend to stay up to watch just one more episode. Some of us, definitely myself included, struggle falling asleep or falling back asleep when we’re woken in the middle of the night.
There’s certainly not much we can do about the 4 am wakeup from a child having a nightmare. But, we can control to some extent our sleep schedule. People who regularly go to bed at the same time, and focus on getting 6-8 hours of sleep every night do so much for their immunity and mental health.
4. Eat Right
You are what you eat rings more true with each passing year. You can boost your immunity by fixing your gut health and the fuel that you put into your body. It’s such a simple concept, but it requires discipline and dedication to do it day after day.
Step one is to drink water before meals, first thing in the morning and right before bed. Rather than consuming carbs for breakfast in the form of bagels, pancakes, or muffins, focus on proteins and healthy fats. Typically there’s a point in the day you should stop eating so you’re not going to bed on a full stomach.
Additionally, make sure your diet gives the nutritional content you need. Place more emphasis on fruits and vegetables. This involves cooking more at home, rather than eating fast food on a regular basis. Turn sugar into a treat consumed on rare occasions, rather than it being a part of your individual food pyramids.
The Beef Liver Trend
I’m typically not a trendy person, but one trend I’ve gotten on board with in the past year that I swear by now is eating beef liver. I saw someone write about how they took beef liver pills instead of their Prenatals. While I don’t fully agree, it peaked my interest.
After doing some more research, I decided during my fourth pregnancy that I would add it to my supplements and see if it changed anything. All of my labs have been significantly better during this pregnancy as opposed to previous ones. I also feel confident knowing that I’m getting more nutrients this way than I otherwise would have.
These are the capsules I purchase; it’s important to note, however that I also cook it at home approximately once a week. Because we get our beef directly from a butcher, we’re able to get organ meats at a competitive price. It’s a win-win for us.
5. Take Care of their Mental Health
We need to have more discussions about keeping ourselves in a healthy mindset. I firmly believe controlling our stress levels and being sure that we remain in a right attitude spills over into our physical health as well. By the way, this is a Biblical concept (for those of us who follow God’s word). The Bible mentions “renewing our minds” and “guarding our hearts” which is the seat of the mind (read this post for more on that concept).
So how exactly are we supposed to do this? Aside from the common ways of reducing stress you’re going to hear from every counselor in America, there are some practical tips you can incorporate in your life. Focus on being grateful and laughing more (especially together as a family).
Find opportunities to give back and be a blessing to others. You can do this monetarily, by volunteering in your church or other organizations, or by simply calling on a friend who’s in the middle of a difficult time.
Be picky about your friends and those who you let into your life. Choose accountability partners from people you trust and will cheer you on. Stay away from the drama and eliminate the relationships that are no good. You don’t have to completely run them out of your life, but you can set clear boundaries and keep them “at arms bay”.
In Conclusion
Focusing on these tips allows you to make some clear progress towards improving your overall wellbeing. Certainly, this is not a catch all list that will promise you that you’ll never be ill again. Hopefully, you have some ideas you can begin doing today to build your immune system, prevent sickness, and help you heal from illness when it does come your way.
