One of the most exciting times in a person’s life is when a new baby is welcomed into the family. Certainly, when mom is ready for it, it’s a wonderful time to drop in for a visit to officially meet and welcome the newest little one. Whenever I visit, I want to be sure I’m not a burden and I’m actually helping a girl out! I want her to know that I’ve been thinking about her during this transitional time. This is why I came up with a “new mom gift basket” of items that I know will be of some help to her in the upcoming days.
I don’t bring everything on this list to every mom I visit. In fact, in all honesty, I probably only bring one or two items to each friend or relative. Usually I pick what I think she’ll enjoy the most. So this list is just an overall idea of what you can bring.
The Basket
First off, think about what you’re going to put all of these items in. A perfect basket in my opinion would be using a diaper caddy. Sure, actual baskets are handy and can be used as well, but having a diaper caddy gives one extra purpose.
If you’re worried because she may already have one, gift her another one anyways. A lot of moms, including myself, use more than one. I like having a diaper caddy in my car and my house. A friend of mine has a diaper caddy in two different spots in her house just because it’s easier to change a diaper in two different spots of her home.
Something Personalized
Living in the South brings a whole new meaning to the word “personalized”. We love it down here, apparently. I’m rather picky about the personalization, and don’t like having my son’s full name plastered everywhere. However, I fully support the fun, pretty initials in the corner of a baby blanket or baby hat or outfit.
The other nice thing is you can support someone local by including a personalized item in your new mom gift basket. Everyone and their mother seems to know someone in the area who has an embroidery machine they use. Early this spring, I had a baby blanket embroidered for a friend and it costed me $10 more.
Baby Clothing Items
Visiting the new mama is the perfect time to bring along last minute baby items you think or know she still needs. Steal a look at new mom’s baby registry! She might have left that you can purchase.
If you’re going the new mom gift basket route and want to add some inexpensive items that help to fill the basket, these baby items are essential. Moms always need socks, booties and mittens especially for a newborn. Including hats or hairbows can really stockpile her up on.
I absolutely love these booties; there’s so many different patterns to pick from, and they serve a double purpose! My babies rarely lose a sock now because they’re secure in these little booties. They’re perfect for the fall and winter because they’re sure to keep little one warm.
You can also add unique extra baby items. Personalized bibs and outfits or bibs with fun designs or messages are cute. Because Bert is a pilot, we’ve gotten airplane designed bibs and hats and I love the unique flair it adds. There’s cute sports themed bibs if baby’s dad or mom is a die hard fan. You can always find fun pop culture type bibs if you know about favorite tv shows and so forth.
Gift Card to Local Coffee Shop
Obviously, coffee shop gift cards are a usual big hit. Again, make it inexpensive. Even a gift card for $10 lets Mama treat herself at least once. Sure, there are some moms that aren’t big into the coffee craze. If you’re not sure, you can always ask her beforehand if she drinks coffee; if not, a gift card to a smoothie place is a great alternative.
Earth Mama’s and Other Post Partum Supplies
By the time you have your second or subsequent baby, you kind of know what to expect. You also know what to include in your post partum supply list. But, when you’re having your first, it’s a completely different ball game.
If your new mom gift basket is for a true new mom, adding some Earth Mama’s brand supplies to the basket is a great way to add some practicality to your gift. I love a lot of Earth Mama’s products and use them during every post partum run I have. Honestly, even if your bringing a basket to someone who’s not having their first child, she may have never used Earth’s Mama before and it could be just what she needs.
My go to items from Earth’s Mama are the Nipple Butter and Herbal Perineal Spray.
But there’s another post partum supply I tend to add to my gift basket. After my first was born, I got these cold packs. I ended up ordering more on Amazon while I was still in the hospital. After more friends had babies, I quickly realized not all hospitals offer them. Now I make sure I give them to anyone I know who’s having a baby because they’re that big of a deal to me.
Self Care Items
Having something for new mom to comfort and relax is a great idea to include in your new mom gift basket. Think fuzzy socks and a new throw blanket. New mugs with cute messages (and include some coffee or tea bags too) are perfect. Even having a succulent or a small flower bouquet is a fantastic option as well.
Stanley cups are the new hype right now, and even if you want to go with a knock off brand, having a tumbler in your gift basket is a really practical gift. Doctors, nurses, and midwives all stress about the importance of drinking water after birth. Having a new tall cup to drink water is definitely something she’s going to use.
Lastly, don’t forget about snacks. Especially if she’s nursing, she’s going to go through some pretty intense hunger cravings in the first few weeks post partum. Food like popcorn, granola bars, protein snacks, or even some fresh fruit is helpful!
When In Doubt,
If you’re really struggling with ideas to add to your gift basket, or you’re just wanting to bring something small, there are two things you can never go wrong with.
Don’t take a simple gift of diapers and wipes for granted. New mom certainly doesn’t! Who knew it was going to cost so much to take care of a child’s poo? Add something fun to a rather simple gift and write down some silly diaper messages for her nighttime diaper stash. Or, go all out and make a diaper tricycle like this one!
If you’re more like me and think food is a love language, make them a homecooked meal. Seriously, nothing says I’m wanting to help you out more than that. Once you’ve become a housewife or mom yourself, you realize how much effort and work goes into preparing a meal for your own family. The fact that you’re easing that burden a tiny bit for someone else will never go unappreciated.
I know some of us have busy schedules and some times we just don’t have the time to throw a meal together beforehand. Even if you bring a homemade dessert, trust me, she’s going to devour it.
Fun or Unique Items to Top It All Off
These last suggestions from me are personal favorites that I love to have for myself. Even the least nostalgic mama still loves having a hand and footprint kit. They are so nice to preserve tiny memories into something she’ll cherish forever.
I really love this mama/baby necklace. I’m actually fixing to replace mine with a new one once our fourth is born. I get compliments from it frequently and it’s for sure something I treasure. A lot of moms enjoy the new mom shirts that you can find literally anywhere on the Internet. I’m also including a shirt I always get compliments on and the forever boy mom will easily adore.
Bring over a small bouquet for the new mama who loves having fresh cut flowers in her house. Likewise, for those plant moms, a new succulent to commemorate baby’s birth can also be appreciated.
Don’t Overstress!
Don’t buy everything on this list; that’s not what the purpose is. Rather, I hope this helped you think of inexpensive extras you can bring over in a “new mom gift basket” or send in the mail if they’re further away.
[…] Obviously, not all of us are creative enough to put together a whole diaper cake. Or, we simply don’t have enough time. I’ve come up with a short list of items you can add to your diaper stash to make the shower gift more unique. These are just simple ideas of items that go above and beyond to let mama know you love her. You can check out this post for assembling these items and more in a New Mom Gift Basket. […]
