What You Need to Know
This recipe has been adapted from a family recipe my mom has made for years. Originally, I made it “my mom’s way” shortly after we got married and my husband loved it. Recently, he told me he really doesn’t like it. I was heartbroken because Sloppy Joes are my go-to. They’re so simple and easy, and something my boys eat without hesitation.
After digging more into what it was he didn’t like (“too sweet”) I decided to try it a different way. My goal with adapting it was to use completely clean ingredients and eliminate the added sugar to make Permanent Roommate happy. I’m sharing it with you today, because obviously it’s been a success.
Tips and Tricks
There’s no secret way to make this, it’s honestly pretty straight forward. Your dish is only going to be as good as the ingredients you put in it. I’m a big Kroger fan over here. I buy the Simple Truth Organic Tomato Sauce and have good results.
I was hoping this year to be able to make my own tomato sauce off of the plants I planted in my garden. Alas, after an unfortunate over-fertilizing mishap, we’ll have to wait for next years bounty. If you are successful with tomatoes in your own garden, you can for sure make this recipe taste even better than mine.
Lastly I would call to your attention the type of bread you’re serving the Sloppy Joes on. Kroger has a fantastic discount bread rack from the fresh bread aisle. I’ve boughten buns there for the past three times I’ve made this recipe and saved money doing so.
Be sure to add these Sloppy Joes to your meal rotation! If you want to know more about that, read this post here. Let me know in the comments how this recipe worked out for you!
