Fun Fact! I’m currently pregnant with our fourth (and probably final) child! Our current youngest will be three when this one is born. Unfortunately, what that means is that at some point in the past three years, we thought we were done. Therefore, I got rid of A LOT of baby items, that I’m now finding I need. This got me thinking about how hard it is for a brand new mom to come up with registry items that you’re not sure you’ll actually use or not. Hence, the need for this blog post: a list of Baby Registry Must Haves you’re definitely going to use.

Baby Swing
I tell every new mom this. A baby swing isn’t just some nice thing to have. No. You NEED a baby swing. You’ll be amazed by how often you’re actually going to use this thing. There’s so many different brands out there that it can be disheartening when you’re trying to find the right one. I’ve used the fisher price brand (linked below) for quite some time. It is by far my favorite.
Baby Doorway Jumper
My mom didn’t care to have one and said us kids only used it once or twice. I found it to be super helpful with mine. I wonder what age we were when my mom put us in it, and how active of babies we were. In my experience, around 6 months or so (especially when the older siblings were playing) mine loved being in theirs. It’s a great transition from the baby swing and allows them to run out some of that energy they have.
Car Seat Cover
This might seem like a duh, but it was something I wondered if I needed with my first baby. Especially if you have a baby in the winter, this is definitely a need. Even if you have a baby in the spring or summer, it’s so nice to have. Nowadays, strangers tend to be overly nosy about a baby. Yuck on that! Having a cover allows you to politely say “Stay away” or “Baby’s sleeping” without being offensive.
Baby Velcro Booties
Again, this is for sure something you want if you have a fall/winter baby. However, even if you have a spring/summer babe, it’s so nice to have these around. What I love most about them is they keep the baby’s socks on and provide some extra warmth. Before I had them, I was constantly losing socks in the grocery store or who knows where else when they fell out of the car seat. My go to brand is Hudson Baby; they have so many different colors or animals to choose from.
Baby Food Containers
These are something you won’t need at the very start of motherhood life. Fast forward down the road 4-6 months and these will come in handy for sure. Baby food can be expensive, and it’s so nice to be able to make baby food at home in bulk and pull these out whenever you need some. Sound Machine
Yes, you will actually use a sound machine all of the time. All of the time. I can’t even begin to tell you how much of your life is going to be consumed by trying to get the baby to sleep for the next year. After my oldest was born, I spent many a nursing session on my phone researching how to get him to sleep for longer periods. Having a sound machine really does help! If you don’t want to put money towards a high class expensive machine, get a small shelf fan. It has worked just as well for me (so long as it’s not pointed on the baby, of course).
Child Sized Wooden Hangers
I find this a personal preference, and something that not everyone is going to need. If you know ahead of time that all your baby clothes are going into a dresser, skip ahead. Let me explain my situation a bit. After becoming homeowners this past November, our bedrooms all now have walk-in closets. I don’t need dressers and hang up practically all of my boys’ clothes.
Up until this point, I used a lot of plastic hangers (mostly from the store the clothing items hung on) and they broke a lot. They also look really un-aesthetically pleasing. I upgraded to wooden hangers and it’s the best thing. When all of their clothes are hanging up, it makes their closet look so uniform, and they will last me through four boys easily. Seriously, if you have more than one child and are planning on hanging up a lot of their clothes, add some hangers to your registry! You won’t regret it for a second!
Diaper Pail/Caddy
I received a diaper pail after my third child and am now wondering how I managed life beforehand. It is so nice having everything set up in a handy diaper caddy that you can move as you please. I typically keep mine on the changing table. However, I love that it goes with me easily in any room I need it. Ultimately, I even take it with me on road trips, and I now have everything easily accessible.
Behind the Door Storage
Can I just warn you about all of the shoes you’re going to go through in the first three years of your new baby’s life! You’re also going to need a spot for the extra sleeve of diapers you just bought and will use in the next month. Let’s not forget about hair bows, socks, hand mittens, bibs, NUKs, bath accessories, and everything else you’re not going to know where to put either. Yes, you need this. Yes, you will be so thankful you have it. Go ahead and add them now.
Noise Reduction Headphones for Babies
This was something I never even thought of having before kids. Someone gifted me a pair of noise cancelling headphones shortly after my first son was born, and it still amazes me how often I use them. Anytime we’re headed to a large, crowded event, these come in handy. Think sports games like basketball or volleyball with a loud buzzer, or events like rodeos, fireworks, outdoor concerts, even monster truck rallies; trust me, you’ll be going to these things with a baby or young toddler and be so thankful you have them.
Hopefully this list gives you some confidence while you create your baby registry. Did any of these items spark an idea of something else to add? Drop them in the comments below!

This was a very informative post. I am a mom of 2, and there are many things that I honestly didn’t need to buy as a first time parent. This list would have been helpful back then. I think the other item that we didn’t use for my second was a change table. Half the time we used our bed or the floor. It was a nice addition, but not necessary. All the best in your pregnancy.

For a changing table for my first three, I used a changing pad on top of their dressers. It cuts back on extra furniture for sure!
